How it came together

For the wall behind reception, Weigl proposed something with real growth in it: countless individual porcelain pieces, each one hand-crafted, building up and outward across the surface, as if the wall itself were coming alive, one part of the same Flora and Fauna thinking that gives the piece its name. Made in porcelain paper clay and touched with 24-karat gold lustre, the finished work spans roughly 12 by 6 metres: the kind of scale that lets a story actually unfold across a wall, rather than simply sit on it. Soho Myriad brought Weigl into a wider art collection curated across the hotel for Emaar, itself a genuine statement: the caliber and range of artists placed throughout speaks to how seriously the client treats art as part of the guest experience, not an afterthought to it.

The piece was very well received, and led to a four-page interview in Oryx, Qatar Airways' in-flight magazine, built around the commission itself.
