Discovery

The brief was loose: something that could echo a theme of discovery, on a ship named for it. Weigl had, until then, built his Contour work around land formations and structures, the shape of terrain. This commission called for something different, and he turned instead to a Contour he'd developed around water: the movement of currents, the pull and flow of a voyage, which felt right for a ship carrying people across the sea.

The first pass was clean and spare - true to Weigl's instinct that the strongest design is often the simplest, with space left to breathe around it. The client loved the form, but felt the surrounding space wanted more presence. Rather than add further sculptural form, Weigl carved into the stone-like surface itself: the names and stories of ten notable British explorers, men and women, chosen with care from a long history, the water and the movement carrying a second, quieter layer of discovery underneath it.

 

What's followed has become one of Weigl's proudest outcomes from any commission. Guests stop, read, trace the names carved into the surface. Strangers strike up conversations over it, sharing their own stories, their own histories, prompted by someone else's. It was designed to hold a room at scale, what it's actually held, again and again, is people's attention, and something of themselves reflected back.
