How it came together

Soho Myriad brought Weigl into a wider art collection curated across the hotel for Emaar, a collection serious enough in scale and caliber that art was clearly treated as central to the guest experience, not an afterthought to it. Among that collection, Flutter is the largest piece and the most prominently placed, the wall behind reception that every guest passes on arrival, the pivotal work anchoring the space.

For that wall, Weigl took something between a flutter and a vine, an abstract idea of ivy finding its way across rock, and let it grow across the surface the way it might in nature: starting from one point and spreading outward in a natural, unforced pattern, countless individual porcelain pieces, each one hand-crafted, building and thickening as they travel, as if the wall itself were coming alive. Made in porcelain paper clay and touched with 24-karat gold lustre, the finished work spans roughly 12 by 6 metres, the kind of scale that lets a story actually unfold across a wall, rather than simply sit on it.

The piece was very well received, and led to press coverage across Dubai, including a four-page interview in Oryx, Qatar Airways' in-flight magazine, and a joint radio interview with Janie Stanfield, then President and Co-Founder of Soho Myriad, both built around the commission itself.
